Abstract

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a condition where the hemoglobin (Hb) level is <11g/dl in the first and third trimesters and <10.5 g/dl in the second trimester. Anemia is also a problem that affects one of the global problems that are of concern to WHO. COVID-19 is a corona virus infection that can cause respiratory tract diseases ranging from mild such as the common cold to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERSCoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Common clinical symptoms in COVID-19 patients are fever, dry cough, dyspnea, fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches.

Objective: to analyze the incidence of maternal anemia and the incidence of COVID-19 during the maternal period.

Methods: The method used in this study is a Systematic Review with a qualitative technique (meta-synthesis) and by using a meta-aggregation approach (meta-aggregation).

Results: Based on the results of the review, the immune response to the COVID-19 virus can limit the availability of iron in the body to eliminate pathogens and a mechanism (foreign body) in the body so that anemia occurs. Thus, COVID-19 greatly affects hemoglobin levels in the blood, especially for pregnant women.

Conclusion: Based on 10 articles that have been reviewed, it can be concluded that pregnant women with anemia have a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 compared to pregnant women without anemia.
